Prof. Dr. Silvia-Iris Beutel reveals why grades fall short – and how a new exam culture can strengthen democracy and learning.

In her article “Assessment, Examinations and Democratic Culture”, Prof. Dr. Silvia-Iris Beutel reveals why grades are far less reliable than commonly assumed – and how they can even reinforce educational inequality. She presents alternatives already being tested in schools: learning ladders, competency grids, portfolios, or socially relevant exam tasks that foster self-determination, cooperation, and motivation. Beutel emphasizes: a new examination culture is overdue – one that makes learning paths visible, strengthens democratic education, and builds trust in students’ potential.
