Beutel, S.-I. & Pant, H. A. (2024). Learning without grades. Alternative concepts of performance assessment (2nd, revised ed.). Stuttgart: Kohlhammer.

“Learning without grades” is an important topic for teaching and school development in terms of both pedagogy and education policy. It is at the centre of debates about educational equality and democratic schools. Experiences of social crisis, concerns about learning deficits, the use of AI – all of this calls for new learning designs, different learning support and a different examination culture. It is about a practice of performance assessment that is based on pedagogical diagnostics, enables the participation of learners, places their support in an effective context and organises this professionally. The book shows ways in which grade-free performance assessment can be organised in all types of school.

Silvia-Iris Beutel is Professor of School Pedagogy and General Didactics at TU Dortmund University. Hans Anand Pant is Professor of Educational Methodology at the Humboldt University of Berlin and Director of the Department of Subject-Specific Knowledge Transfer at the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN) in Kiel.
