How can prospective teachers and newcomers to the profession be prepared to shape a democratic school and classroom culture and confront anti-democratic challenges in schools? This discussion paper by Prof. Dr. Silvia-Iris Beutel, Michaele Geweke, Dr. Lutz van Spankeren, and Dr. Christiane Ruberg first focuses on democratic concepts and practical experiences from schools, discusses the position of "democracy education" in teacher training programs, and links this with considerations for the initial and continuing education of teachers that at least partially take into account the professionalization for the cross-cutting task of democracy education. Finally, the paper addresses the need for development and research from an educational science perspective.
