‘Performance is discussed as a term and pedagogical concept. The reference to school theory and historical genesis leads to central questions of dealing with performance, its measurement and standardisation according to different reference values as well as its exchange value and the associated status attributions within the entitlement system of the modern school. Performance and performance assessment are fundamental questions of educational equity and decisive parameters of a democratic school. The article addresses two areas of educational culture and discussion: on the one hand, the fundamental analytical-theoretical debate on ‘performance’ and, on the other, the task of ensuring greater fairness in the day-to-day ‘practice’ of schools. Both perspectives are essential and are linked by the work on the humane sense of direction of pedagogy, the reality of which is characterised by such contrasts.’
